GAYA is the district in Indian state of Bihar. It is a city of ancient historical and mythological significance. It is one of the major tourist attractions of Bihar. Situated on the banks of the Phalgu River, it is a place sanctified by the Jain, Hindu, Islam and Buddhist religions. It is surrounded by small rocky hills by three sides and the river flowing on the fourth (eastern) side. The city has a mix of natural surroundings, age old buildings, green areas and narrow bylanes. Mahabodhi Temple stands tall and proud portraying the architectural splendor of the past. Standing on a 48 square feet tall basement, the structure resembles a pyramid but for its cylindrical top. Belonging to the 7th century, the temple was reconstructed in 1880 and has since had many facelifts. Though the main deity is Lord Buddha, the temple promotes tolerance towards other religions. The Chatras built at the top of Mahabodhi temple preach sovereignty of religion. Apart from followers of Buddhism, Hindu devotees too consider this site important to them, as they consider Buddha as the ninth incarnation of god Vishnu. 25 meters tall, it is by far the largest and the first Buddha statue ever built in India. Owing to its huge size, it is quite a star-catcher with not just the pilgrims but every tourist in Bodh GAYA. Bodhi Tree, believed to be the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment, is one of the chief revered locations in Bodh GAYA. Located south of the Mahabodhi Temple, the existing tree is of fifth generation of original Bodhi Tree. Around 80 ft in height, the tree is approximately 115 years old. Under the tree, there is a stone platform on which it is believed that Lord Buddha sat in meditation gazing in the east direction.

Chinese Temple, located in the vicinity of the Bodhi temple, is a beautiful Buddha temple erected by Chinese Buddhist monks. A part of the Mahabodhi Temple, it is one of the most sacred shrines in Bodhgaya. Located towards the northern side of the temple lies the pathway which was used by Buddha during Buddha’s third week of meditation. It was at this spot that he practiced walking meditation which is also called Cankamana.
Surrounding the temple are the spots where he walked and his footsteps have been carved into lotuses (made in black stone). You would often see many monks who chant in the praise of Buddha close to the pathway creating a soothing atmosphere.

An excellent spot that reaches out to the hearts of those who love anything ancient, Barabar Caves date back to Mauryan era that span between 322 BC and 185 BC. They proudly hold the top rank of being the most ancient surviving rock-cut caves in the land. Four caves comprise Barabar caves out of which the most fascinating caves are Lomas Rishi caves. Its construction shares similarity to wooden huts, which were home to Buddhist monks. Lomas Rishi caves are the oldest of all rock-cut caves as well and they influenced many to come in the following centuries. The Hindu sculptures and Jain sculptures found in the caves date back to 273 BC to 232 BC. The inscriptions on the walls depict the history and growth of Buddhism.

It is a very old temple built in the 15th century. We have to climb up a small hillock to reach the temple. The steps route is in between houses of local people. At the starting of steps route, there is a temple of Bhima (One of Five Pandavas). We can see his knee impression here. Here Bhima did Shraddhakarma, hence called as Bhimvedi GAYA.
After climbing around 200 steps we will reach Mangala Gowri temple campus. There are several temples in that campus. Lord Ganesh temple, Lord Shiva temple and a very old temple of Lord Janardhan Swamy, Kali Maa temple, Breast fell place present in the campus. A Bilwa tree also present in that temple.
